For many years, we’ve had the privilege of working alongside Matika through study, health challenges and employment. We’ve helped her search and apply for work, prepare her resume, build her interview skills and access suitable work clothing. We also assisted Matika to renew her First Aid and CPR certification, helping her remain job-ready and meet workplace requirements.

Here, Matika shares her journey in her own words.

My name is Matika, I’m 26 years old, and I’ve been with Key Community for many years. My journey with them first started while I was studying business and retail, and they’ve been by my side ever since.

Living with ongoing physical and mental health conditions has made finding and keeping suitable employment challenging at times. There have been periods where I’ve had to step away from work to focus on my health, including recovering from back injuries and managing my mental health. It hasn’t always been an easy road, but throughout every stage, Key Community has continued to support and encourage me.

Over the years they’ve helped me with everything from preparing my resume and interview skills to reaching out to potential employers and helping me find opportunities that suited my abilities and circumstances. Having that ongoing support has made a huge difference to my confidence and has reminded me that I didn’t have to navigate everything on my own.

Eventually I found a position with Elm Lifestyle, and it has genuinely been life-changing. I now have a workplace where I feel supported, valued and able to contribute while also managing my health. Being back at work has helped improve not only my confidence, but also my independence, social life and overall wellbeing.

Key Community has continued to support me even after starting work by providing practical workplace assistance, including supportive work shoes and anti-fatigue mats so I can work more comfortably behind the counter. These small adjustments have made a big impact, allowing me to stay comfortable during my shifts and continue doing the job I enjoy.

Looking back, I’m proud that I never gave up, even when life became difficult. My journey hasn’t been straightforward, but it has shown me that with the right support, patience and determination, it’s possible to overcome challenges and achieve your goals.

I’m incredibly grateful to the team at Key Community for believing in me through every stage of my journey. Their support has helped me build confidence, find meaningful employment and create a brighter future for myself.

Since Matika started at Elm Lifestyle, we’ve continued to work alongside her through ongoing mentoring and guidance. Regular conversations about workplace relationships, communication and managing challenges have helped Matika build confidence, overcome barriers and maintain her employment.
