Things were pretty tough for Mick before he came to Key. He was unemployed but looking for work, and living with a number of health conditions, including diabetes, arthritis and ongoing back and shoulder pain.
His Employment Consultant, Brad, supported him with interviews, linking him in with employers and finding work. Brad also helped with the practical things Mick needed to get started, like work boots, protective gear and background checks, and gave him regular encouragement along the way. Mick says Brad really helped him believe in himself.
A few months ago, Brad suggested a casual cleaning and handyman role at The Youthie in Nambucca Heads. Since then, Mick says, everything has been going great.
Mick has been keeping busy with cleaning, general maintenance and fixing up the gardens and outdoor areas at The Youthie. The gardens are coming along nicely, with tomatoes and corn now planted. It’s made The Youthie a more welcoming place for local young people.
Brad says:
“The visual impact Mick has already made at The Youthie has been immense. He’s taken on several projects around the site and is already eager to tackle bigger ones. His initiative, work ethic and pride in the workplace have made him a valued member of the team in a very short time.”
What Mick is most proud of is starting casual work again. After a long time without a job and feeling like he had no direction, he’s got his drive back. He’d like to be his own boss again one day, but for now he’s really happy as a casual labourer with Key Community Group.
When it comes to his approach to work, Mick keeps it simple:
“Work hard, be honest and do the best work at all times.”
