Since 2010, Gen had been out of the workforce due to the impact of fibromyalgia and a spinal disorder. While chronic pain, mobility restrictions and physical limitations affected the type of work she could do, they never diminished her skills, experience or passion for helping others. Gen knew she still had plenty to offer, she just needed an opportunity to show it.
After successfully placing a participant with a local business, Bec recently attended an onsite appointment to check in on how things were progressing. During the visit, the employer mentioned they were finding it difficult to stay on top of organisation and administrative tasks as the business continued to grow.
Recognising an opportunity to support both the employer and another participant looking for work, Bec started a conversation about how the right person could make a real difference. Together, they discussed a flexible approach – starting with smaller hours to allow someone to settle into the role, learn the business and gradually build confidence and capacity over time.
When the opportunity arose, Gen was ready for it.
Over the past five months, with support from Bec and Key Community Group, Gen had been exploring opportunities that matched her skills, experience and physical capacity. Together, they identified suitable roles and the workplace supports that would help Gen thrive. With a strong background in administration, reception and community-based roles, Gen had plenty to offer the right employer.
With Bec’s encouragement and advocacy, Gen was introduced to the employer, and from day one, she made an immediate impression.
She connected naturally with the team, fit seamlessly into the workplace culture and quickly began making a positive impact. It didn’t take long for her experience, knowledge and leadership skills to shine, with her ideas, expertise and support already making her a valued member of the team.
Her employer, Toni, couldn’t be happier with the impact Gen has already made.
“Gen fits in seamlessly with the team and has a natural ability to grasp and build on concepts quickly. Her previous experience has been invaluable, broadening our knowledge and sparking new ideas. United Funeral Care is truly fortunate to have her as part of the team.”
Now in her third week of employment, Gen is thriving. Her confidence continues to grow each day as she strengthens her independence and re-establishes herself in the workforce.
The joy and pride Gen has felt since securing this role has been truly special to witness. After searching for the right opportunity for several years, finding a workplace where she feels valued, supported and able to contribute has meant so much.
“I can’t believe that Bec has managed to find for me the ideal workplace. I have found the staff welcoming, helpful and open to accept my help and it just seems to be the perfect fit. I have been looking for a part-time opportunity like this for about three years and was unable to find anything suitable, but Bec has made this happen for me and I’m very grateful.”
As Gen settled into her new role, Bec continued to provide tailored support behind the scenes – helping coordinate workplace supports, providing practical and financial assistance where needed, checking in regularly and offering encouragement and guidance throughout the transition.
It’s a wonderful example of what can happen when strengths are recognised, opportunities are created and people are supported to achieve their goals.
