At Key Community Group, we’re celebrating a milestone that reminds us why inclusion matters.
Phoenix, one of our participants, began his new role as a Grounds Assistant at Coffs Coast Holiday Parks, a role that’s already giving him a new sense of confidence and pride.
Phoenix, who is nonverbal and lives with an intellectual disability, started work in March, after months of steady preparation, patience, and collaboration between Key Community, City of Coffs Harbour, and Coffs Coast Holiday Parks.
His journey began in the Key Community Garden Program, where Phoenix learned hands-on skills in mowing, gardening, and plant care. But it wasn’t just his skills that grew, it was his confidence, focus, and pride. With gentle guidance from Jess Nero and his support team- Darren Long, Dan Shinfield, Trish Pithers, Nathan Crabtree, and William Dunning, Phoenix developed a strong routine, a sense of independence and a genuine joy for his work.
When the requirement for a White Card posed a challenge, Key’s team found a creative solution having Nathan and William complete the course, so Phoenix could still safely participate. With the support of Lauren Cavanagh (HR, City of Coffs Harbour) and Steven Cook (Grounds Supervisor), this inclusive approach made it possible for Phoenix to take the next big step.
Since starting at Coffs Coast Holiday Parks, the change in Phoenix has been remarkable. He’s more engaged, calm, and motivated, taking pride in every task, from mowing lawns to maintaining the gardens he now helps care for. He’s thriving in a structured role, and his enthusiasm has become a bright spot in the team’s day.
“Phoenix is one of the hardest working staff we have,” says Steven Cook. “He brings joy to everyone around him with his infectious smile. Key have been amazing in supporting Phoenix and working closely with our team on disability awareness, we’re really proud to have him on board.”
For Phoenix, this job isn’t just employment, its purpose, belonging and a chance to show the world what’s possible with the right support.
For everyone at Key, it’s a beautiful reminder that inclusion isn’t about changing people to fit the world, it’s about shaping the world, so everyone has a place in it.
